Earlier this month, Dr. Suhad Abdulrahman Yasin, holder of a PhD in Nanofibers from the University of Duhok and longtime SASTA affiliate, proudly participated in the 2021 Arab-American Frontiers of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Symposium.
Turning 10 years old this year, the Arab-American Frontiers program has, over the years, brought together more than 800 prominent researchers from the Arab diaspora and the United States. The program aims and has been consistently able to drive conversations about scientific advances and promote prolific collaborations between scientists from both parts of the world.
While the Symposium had emanated from multiple Arab countries before, this year it was held virtually from the 1st to the 4th of November, amidst COVID-19 concerns. Still, as Dr. Suhad attests the Symposium was highly engaging and fruitful, covering topics that included Advanced Materials, e-Health, Cybersecurity, and more.
Participating in such a renowned forum reflects Dr. Suhad’s stature as a scientist as well as her eagerness to contribute to global change through science and technology. Her distinguished expertise in the field of Nanofibers has led her to exploring plenty of useful applications of the novel technology, such as the use of Nanofibers to remove hazardous materials from water and the production of Nanofibers-based face masks and respirators to decrease the spread of SARS-COV-2.
Dr. Suhad is also a leading advocate for empowering Arab women in Science. Her work as an accomplished Arab woman scientist has been celebrated before in Nature Middle East and Vogue Middle East.
Through her diligent work, Dr. Suhad ultimately hopes to inspire young researchers in her beautiful homeland of Iraq. “I hope I can one day become an influencer and an example for younger women and students. I truly see a bright future for science in Iraq; we simply need a push and support”, says Dr. Suhad.
