The Eastern Mediterranean Chapter for ISEE
The Newest International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE) Chapter is the Eastern Mediterranean Chapter which has 30 active members from the following countries: Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Sudan, Yemen, and the Palestinian Occupied Territories and Chaired by Wael Al-Delaimy and Co-Chaired by Narges Khanjani. The Chapter had its first meeting in 2019 at the Utrecht Conference and then held its first regional conference in December 2019. The Chapter also is planning an oral symposium at the annual conference and was planning education webinars. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the first webinar was dedicated to an understanding of the COIVD-19 situation in members’ respective countries. As a result, on May 2nd, 7 presenters from Pakistan, Iraq, Yemen, Gaza from Palestinian Territories, Lebanon and Morocco provided insightful presentations about how COVID-19 is presenting in these countries.
It showed how early and consistent intervention helped control the pandemic, such as in Palestine and Morocco, but there is also high risks from Yemen for failing to screen or treat such patients, and there is uncertainty in Iraq and possible second wave in Lebanon given the unrest. Pakistan provided a very good example of how research can identify and define strategies by studying knowledge and developing models to predict the spread and duration of this epidemic.
