Magid Abou-Gharbia

Professor Magid Abou-Gharbia is Associate Dean for Research, Laura H. Carnell Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Director of the Moulder Center for Drug Discovery Research (MCDDR), School of Pharmacy, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA.

Prior to joining Temple in 2008, Magid spent 26 years at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals as Senior Vice President and Head of Chemical and Screening Sciences. During his time at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, he was responsible for overseeing chemistry and screening efforts of 500 scientists at four US facilities and 150 scientists in Hyderabad, India.  Dr. Abou-Gharbia research team at Wyeth (Pfizer) has contributed to the discovery of eight marketed drugs and several are in clinical development resulted in Abou-Gharbia’s 115 US patents, over 350 Worldwide patents and over 285 publications, presentations and invited lectures. In his current role, he is responsible for Setting and implementing School of Pharmacy Research strategies to promote the school’s research and entrepreneurial enterprise and Directing research efforts of multidisciplinary team focusing on the design and synthesis of small molecule therapeutics in multiple disease areas.  The Center’s objective is two fold; Discovery of biologically active lead drug candidates and to probe and test biological hypotheses, facilitating collaborative research within Temple University researchers and with external collaborators in the US and abroad and training undergraduate and graduate students, junior faculty, Postdoctoral Fellows and visiting scientists on state-of-the art enabling technologies and modern Drug discovery and Development.
