Dr. Akram Alomainy speaks at Texas A&M University at Qatar
On 2nd April 2013, Dr. Akram Alomainy, SASTA member and Assistant Professor in Antenna Engineering and Electromagnetics at Queen Mary, University of London , delivered a talk titled “Antennas and Radios: Making You The Centre of Smart Healthcare Networks” at Texas A&M University at Qatar specifically for the Wireless Communication Research Group. The talk introduced hisgroup’s activity on various aspects related to healthcare and ICT from antennas, radios and electromagnetic prospective. The talk also explored the different research work, themes and activities we have been and still covering with relation theoretical, analytical and experimental work.
The main aim of the talk was to deliver certain messages about the group’s capabilities and also explore areas of mutual interests between the two teams working towards joint research work leading to publications and potentially joint grant proposals. The talk was well received and was followed up by discussions with Prof. Khalid Qaraqe, Professor of electric engineering and SASTA member, and a number of his group’s members including Dr Muhammed Shakir. As a first step, the two groups intend to exchange ideas linked to Specific Absorption Rate in human tissues caused by mobile and radio signals and how new advances in telecommunications such as LTE can aid in reducing power dissipated in the healthy tissues. The two groups aim also to work together on joint publication as first milestone followed by collaboration for grant proposal. The latter has already been initiated; however, at a larger remit involving members of SASTA who already started discussion on possibility of using ICT in healthcare for non-invasive detection of vital human body signals to be used in assistive and preventive technologies.
The two groups also managed to establish mutual grounds when it comes to physical layer understanding for electronics used in the telecommunication industry and how the two groups can communicate to strengthen and complement each other’s expertise.
